One person was injured last Friday in a two-car accident in Butler Township.  According to reports, a man attempted to pass another car by traveling on the right side of a two-lane road when the other car attempted to turn left onto another road.  The driver of the turning vehicle was injured and the driver of the passing car was cited for illegal passing.

Four injured in deck collapse in Fayette County

Three women and a child were injured yesterday when a backyard deck collapsed.  According to reports, the three women and child were sitting on the deck when it separated from the wall of the house, dropping them to the ground.  All four were taken to the hospital with various injuries.

The failure of a deck can be caused by several factors.  The design of the deck may be insufficient to handle the weight of the deck and the objects and people on it.  The manner of attachment of the deck to a house may also be inadequate for the stresses placed on the deck by the deck structure itself and the weight it must support.  It is also possible that the deck structure can deteriorate to the point that it fails and collapses.  It is recommended that decks be inspected regularly to confirm the safety of these structures.   Personal injury lawyer Tom Matvey.

Woman dead after being struck by van in South Fayette

A 70-year-old nursing assistant died yesterday after being struck by a van in the parking lot of the Country Meadows of South Hills nursing home.  The woman was a nursing assistant at the nursing home and was on her way into work at the time of the accident.  According to reports, the van was moving backwards at the time of the accident.  It was unclear yesterday whether the woman was struck by the van and knocked over by the impact or whether she had collapsed to the ground prior to being hit by the van.  The investigation into this unfortunate accident is continuing.

Because the circumstances of this accident are currently unclear, I cannot comment on the relative responsibility of the parties involved for the cause of this accident.  Pedestrian accident attorney.

Woman injured in fall into manhole

A Pittsburgh woman fell thirty feet down an open manhole on Saturday, landing in ten feet of water and sustaining moderate injuries.   According to reports, the woman was walking on West Carson Street late Saturday night when she fell in to the open manhole.   Firefighters later rescued her through the use of a metal rescue basket and flotation devices.

This incident raises interesting issues regarding landowner liability for fall down injuries.  One question is whether the injured woman has to prove that the property owner knew or should have known of the condition of the manhole.  Another is whether she had a right to be on the property where she fell and how that might affect the liability of the landowner.

Van knocked off I-79 bridge, three injured

A van traveling on I-79 was struck by another vehicle in Greene County yesterday, causing the van to fly off a bridge and onto a road below.  According to reports, the van was traveling in the fast lane of I-79 when an SUV bumped the van.  The van driver lost control of her vehicle and it went over the bridge and landed on its roof.  The woman driver and her two children sustained minor to moderate injuries.

Of significant note is the fact that all occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of this accident.  The structural strength of the van and the use of seat-belts protected the occupants of the van from serious injury.
