A lawsuit filed in 2010 alleges that doctors at an Erie medical practice performed unnecessary surgeries, two of which allegedly led to the deaths of the patients involved. According to the lawsuit, the doctors performed unnecessary angioplasties on multiple patients and received payment for the surgeries from Medicare or other insurance providers and allegedly also received illegal payments from the hospital involved. Two of the patients involved developed complications from the surgeries and died due to the complications they experienced.
This case is similar to one currently under investigation in Westmoreland County, PA where it is alleged that physicians performed unnecessary surgeries on heart patients. If the allegations in both cases are true, there may be criminal charges to be filed and numerous medical malpractice claims against the physicians and the doctors involved because of the unnecessary surgeries.
